Brathay 10in10, Day 4

I had a good night’s sleep but woke up tired and with no enthusiasm to get out of bed. Even after a spot of breakfast and some early morning physio with Sarah I hadn’t conjured up any motivation for the day’s run. Usually I can decided on a pace to run depending on how I feel but frankly today I couldn’t be bothered to even think about it. The time seemed to come round to 9:30am and the race start far too quickly.

I dibbed my chip and set off. The faster runners, Paul, Jonathan, Richard and Sean soon over took me and were out of sight. My pace for the first 4 miles wasn’t much more than a jog and shortly after Hawkshead Rexy caught me up. Up to box 3 (6 mile point) Rexy kept me company but his plan was to walk while drinking some flat Coke so I pushed on and sadly had to leave him behind. It would have been nice to have kept some company over the lonely miles. After Rexy beating me yesterday I wondered for the rest of the course whether he would catch me up at some point but sadly he didn’t and I spent the rest of the day running on my own without seeing another runner.

It had been forecast to be a bit warmer than the previous day. I was quite comfortable for the first half of the course but as the sun got further up in the sky I started to get very warm. The last 5 miles of the course offer little shade and I had sweat glistening on my forearms and dripping off my elbows. Luckily my hydration plan is still able to cope and I made it round with dehydrating.

I pondered unhappy memories from this point last year. It was the final day I managed before having to pull out with my knee injury. I’m starting to get pretty sore calves but I’m not injured, so feel confident to get much further in the event this year and hopefully complete it.

Over the last few miles I smelt the finish getting closer and speeded up. My finishing time was 3:55:56. A negative split for the second time in 2 days so really pleased with that.

Sadly no family at the finish today but I knew this would be the case, it’s Monday and just a normal working day. The next few days will be similar and I’ll just have to get on with running. I’m being looked after really well by Sarah the student physio who has been assigned to me. Thanks Sarah for all the pain so far.

Today’s album of the day is, Pet Shop boys “Disco2”. Dance music kings of the 80’s and 90’s and they still going strong! I could pick several of their albums but this one has great sounds and with all the tracks mixed together, flows brilliantly. I also like the fun samples of Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, out of Absolutely Fabulous.
