After the past two weeks of hilly races, today’s flat marathon at Rhyl was planned to be a relatively easy affair but I should know better by now that they never are. Even a flat course isn’t easy because as a competitive runner I always push myself, so ran faster and therefore making it as tough as a slower hilly race. The only positive side is the race is over quicker!
The event was called “Run Fest Wales” and incorporated a 5k, 10k, half marathon and a full marathon. I suppose it goes without saying I ran the marathon. The course today was 2 laps of the half marathon course which took us up and down the sea front twice basically to Prestatyn and back. By far not the most scenic or interesting course but certainly very flat and good for any runners looking for one of those illusive PB’s.
I ran a lot of the race with my good marathon friend Jonathan Kettle and also the Godfather of marathon running Steve Edwards. I was very honoured to have assisted pacing Jonathan to a new PB by 10 minutes and beating me for the first time, if only by 3 seconds! And as usual also beaten by Steve. My finishing time today was 3 hours 13 minutes 19 seconds so good running by all.
Lovely to see some other A&Ters out on the course including Louise doing the 10k and Steve and Joan in the half marathon. Also good to see some of the usual marathon suspects out on the course, you know who you all are and especially Kate in all her usual splendid colour.
So very pleased to reach a couple of statistical mile stones; 50th sub 3:30 and 10th Sub 3:10.
