Brathay 10 in 10, Day 5 – Thrilled!

Dry, mostly cloudy, occasional sunny spells and blustery wind. I could have done without the wind especially going south down the west side of the lake where it was predominately in my face. Not as bad coming back up the other side of the lake but still often blustery.

I started off with a greater sense of purpose and faster than normal. My confidence had return. Yesterday’s injury was still there but not affecting things nor getting any worse. I lead from the front from virtually the start and by the time I was at Hawkshead I couldn’t see anyone behind. I pushed on fairly hard up to half way in 1 hour 44 minutes (just under 8 minute miling). I kept expecting to see Tony catching up from behind but he wasn’t there. The further I got into the race the more I started to believe I could actually win today. This would be my first marathon win ever. Could I manage it? I kept pushing so my pace didn’t drop, which was making me puff and pant much more than normal. On I went through Bowness and still no sign of Tony. As I made it into Ambleside my excitement started to build. Up Brathay’s drive and down on to the lawn and the finish, I’d done it. I’d finished first! I’m so thrilled! For years I’ve wondered whether I’d ever win a marathon. What a special day! Finishing time 3 hours 25 minutes 42 seconds and another negative split.

There was a second challenge for me today, Charlotte came in the ice bath and challenged me to stay in as long as her. We agreed on 6 minutes so after 8 minutes I agreed to come out but she stayed in for another 2 minutes. Seems like I won the race today but lost the challenge! Respect Charlotte. 10 minutes at 2 degrees is “Hardcore” in my books!

Seem to have acquired the nick name “Malcolm Powder” by the physios!
