Walk down the Drive
For most 10in10er’s who only do the event once, the event is considered as being 9 marathons and day 10. On day 10 when hundreds of other runners come along to do the main marathon, us 10in10er’s called it the lap of honour. Even though this is my 10th 10in10, I am considering it in exactly the same way, I need to complete 9 days and then I will get my lap of honour. Quite a few of my family, friends and past 10in10er’s have described the whole of this final 10in10 of mine as 10 laps on honour. I can see their logic, but I am far too cautious about this event to consider doing a lap of honour until nearer the end of the event.
All that said, today did feel a little that way. In fact, even yesterday had started me thinking that way, with Scott coming out on the course to run for the first time ever and with me.
Today Penny who did the 10in10 with me for the first time in 2011 was out on the course and so was James who did it with me in 2019 and 2022. Together with the seven returners this year, it felt like lots of friends are starting to gather to support us all but also watch on at my 10th 10in10. It was a lovely special moment to see Aly, who used to run the 10in10 for Brathay in the earlier days out supporting near Lakeside. This final 10in10 is already starting to feel very special, shame the event doesn’t get any easier, even with all my experience of it. Another day closer to the Lap of Honour.
