10in10, Day 1

0

Finishing time
3 hours 53 minutes 55 seconds

Weather
Cool, only a light breeze but a lot of rain at the start and several showers on the way round. It did become brighter during the second half.

I took the run at a comfortable pace for me, slower than I would normally run a marathon but didn’t hold my stride back because I don’t believe this would have any benefit. The third quarter of the route is quite undulating so I elected to walk some short bits of the steeper climbs. I also walked up the sharp hill from 21.3 to 21.6 miles which had been my plan before the event and I will continue to do so over the coming days.
I was pleased with my time but a little disappointed at feeling more knackered than I expected at the finish. An hour later after some soup, a dip in the Ice Bath and a shower, I felt much better. While I write this blog I’m enjoying some biscuits and Lucozade Sport.
Yes, you did read that right I entered the Ice Bath. I did 2 dips of a minute. Blimy it is cold (only 4 degrees), it makes your legs tingle like small pins are being poked all over them and your toes go numb after 30 seconds. When you come out your legs are bright red like you’ve been out in the sun too long without any sun cream.

Today’s Highlight
The chocolate cookies I attached to my 10 mile bottle, wonderful!

Today’s Low Point
Feeling a bit naff in the Goldsworthy room 15 minutes after finishing the run. I had to have a lie down on the floor under the sandwich table. Some of the other runners wondered where I had gone.
