2nd Gin Pit Trail Marathon

Well once again it’s all over and the dust has settled or probably a better description is the mud has and the puddles cleared. Firstly I would like to thank all the people who have helped me put it together, without all of you it wouldn’t have been possible.

First to thank is Yuk-Lam, who has backed me in arranging the event, ordered the pasties from Claphams of Leigh (who deserve a mention because they are so tasty), got the biscuits, Jelly Babies and everything for the kitchen. Then on the day while looking after our kids, helped give out race numbers, did a spot of time keeping and handed out medals.

John Lee, for date engraving all the medals and making them bespoke for the event. This saved me a small fortune which really helps with generating the maximum money for charity.

Gary Stevens, for loaning me A&T’s clip boards and spare race numbers.

Mark Riches, for sorting out the UKA race licence.

Chris Scholes, Brenda Wane, Simon Ford for their shift work with the time keeping.

James Duffy, for manning the water station through sunshine and rain.

My Mum and Han May, for working in the very warm Welfare kitchen and serving the wonderful pasties and hot drinks.

Noel and his St John’s Ambulance team for watching over us on the day.

Phil, for taking some great photos to help us runners remember the day.

Jackie Collins, for her several trips to Costco for the 315 bottles of water we used.

John Bradley for helping me put up the 26 signs on Saturday and keeping me company for the 2 hours it took.

Lastly, Pat and the Welfare club for letting us use their premises.

If I have missed anyone, I’m sorry and tell me off when you see me!

I’ve not had time to carefully calculate the money the event has made yet but it is looking somewhere between £500 & £600 which will be going to the Brathay Trust.

Now for the race report, on the day we had 32 runners turn up for the marathon and 21 for the half marathon. For the marathon it was the two favourites who won both the first male and female trophies. For the men it was Glyn Kay from Horwich who had come second last year so well done to him on his second attempt with a finishing time of 3 hours 8 minutes 33 seconds. For the ladies it was a second straight win for Caroline Hemming from Glazebrook coming in with 3 hours 32 minutes 26 seconds. For the Half marathon, A&T’s very own head coach Shaun Moran came back first in 1 hour 29 minutes and the first lady was Susan Fletcher with an excellent time of 1 hour 40 minutes. Well done to all the finishers, you should be all be proud of your achievements on a day that was very warm even though we did get some rain during the latter stages.
